What is Dog A.I.D
Well the official line is:
"Dog A.I.D. is a registered charity and is accredited to Assistance Dogs UK and Assistance Dogs International" etc etc.......
But what I think Dog A.I.D. is all about is:
Empowering the client; by supplying the disabled pet dog owner with a trainer to help give them the knowledge and skills to turn our lovable family pooch into a qualified Assistance Dog. Not all dogs are suitable or make the grade, but if you want to be enabled and less disabled Dog A.I.D. can help make this possible. It is important to remember that each client/pet partnership is assessed by Dog A.I.D on it's own merit. Whether the dog be a guarding breed or a terrier, working dog or Heinz 57 cross-breed, a good reliable temperament is of paramount importance. Some breeds may be easier to train than others and previous dog handling experience may also be taken into account when being assessed to join the scheme.
Unlike other Assistance Dog charities, Dog A.I.D. doesn't have a breeding stock of puppies to train. All dogs are the clients own pet dog. All trainers and staff are volunteers and give their time for free. At present there are over 70 trainers nationwide helping multiple clients and their dogs reach their potential.
Dog A.I.D. may be able to help you if you're over 15 years of age and have a physical disability which makes routine tasks such as opening doors, bending down when dressing/undressing and many more challenging tasks.
As well as the physical help that a qualified assistance dog will bring to your life, they will also help bring you confidence and greater independence.
Courage: the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.
